On the heels of dropping a 5-4 overtime decision at home the night before, the Kelowna Chiefs dealt Osoyoos the same fate 24 hours later, knocking off the Coyotes 6-5 in three-on-three sudden death, Saturday evening at the Sun Bowl.
Osoyoos fell behind 2-0 after the first and despite tying the game just past the seven minute mark of the second period, gave up three more to trail 5-2. The Coyotes drew a bit closer before the period was out, but still found themselves down a pair at 5-3 following 40 minutes of play.
That’s when Russell Weatherhead went to work, scoring twice, four minutes into the third, as well as with only 1:53 remaining to force overtime.
Unfortunately for the Coyotes, Kelowna got the game winner at 1:58 of the extra session.
Nicholas Vopat, Kaelen Halowaty and Cameron Whitelaw had the other Osoyoos markers. Austin Cooper and Spencer Fleck contributed two assists apiece.
Russell Newman suffered the loss in net. The Chiefs outshot the Coyotes 39-34.
Remarkably, one goal decided all five meetings between Kelowna and Osoyoos this season. Four of the five went past regulation, each team recording a shootout and overtime victory.
The Coyotes have back-to-back home games next weekend, Friday, January 17th against the Quesnel River Rush and Saturday, January 18th versus the Williams Lake Mustangs. Both get underway at 7:00 pm. Friday’s Game Sponsor is Fortis BC.
