Never before had the Coyotes been involved in a shootout to decide a game. However, that’s exactly what determined Sunday’s outcome in Oliver, unfortunately a 5-4 loss to the visiting North Okanagan Knights.
Osoyoos trailed for most of the contest, down two goals twice at 2-0 and 3-1.
Ethan McKinley, who stretched his consecutive game point streak to 14 with a goal and an assist, tied things 3-3 early in the third period, only to have the Knights go back in front 4-3 a mere 35-seconds later.
As the Coyotes continued to press late, they were rewarded with just 2:02 remaining, when Jack Pass scored his second of the game to force overtime.
Osoyoos controlled the five minute extra period, outshooting North Okanagan 6-1, but was unable to capitalize on a number of great opportunities.
The Knights finally prevailed after five rounds of the shootout.
Carter Yarish also tallied for the Coyotes, while adding one assist.
Rhett Harkot was tagged with the defeat, which saw Osoyoos hold a 52-38 edge in shots through regulation and overtime.
The Coyotes face the Kelowna Chiefs on Wednesday night (January 11th), getting underway at 7:35 at the Sun Bowl Arena.
