Shooting prowess nets Coyotes’ Torres Rookie of the Week

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) has announced Ethan Torres of the Osoyoos Coyotes as its Rookie of the Week, for the period ending Nov. 2.

The Kelowna native scored four goals and added an assist in two games for the Coyotes. In a 7-5 loss to the Sicamous Eagles, Torres had two goals and three points. In their 4-3 overtime win over the Nelson Leafs, he opened the scoring on the power-play, then tied the game 2-2 late in the second period.

“I played pretty well those last two games and I was moving the puck well with my twin brother who recently joined the team from Timmins, Ont.,” says Torres. “I honestly liked when I shoot the puck more because usually I’m a passer and when I scored those goals, I realized that I should start shooting more.”

The 5-9, 155-pound forward considers himself a playmaker and has really good chemistry with his brother Jake.

“Him and I just move the puck really well together and he’s a little bit faster than me, so he can get around guys and I just give the puck to him and he usually scores,” says Ethan. “Right now I feel like I can score and I have a lot of confidence with the puck. I feel like that’s my playing style — a speed guy who can go around the defenceman and shoot the puck – picking corners.”

Torres leads the Coyotes with eight goals and shares the team points lead with Russell Weatherhead at 12.
