The Osoyoos Coyotes won their first ever shootout, Saturday night at the Sun Bowl Arena, defeating the Merritt Centennials 3-2.

Scott Dyck and Spencer Fleck buried their shootout attempts, while Hunter Arntsen closed the door on two Merritt opportunities.

Following a scoreless first period, the Centennials got on the board early in the second, with the Coyotes responding less than a-minute-and-a-half later.

Osoyoos took a 2-1 lead before the middle period was out, goals coming from Mason Rudolph and Dexter Materi.

Merritt again evened things on the powerplay near the halfway point of the third period, setting up overtime.

Three-on-three five minutes of bonus hockey was a nail bitter, which saw the Coyotes have two unsuccessful breakaways, including one while defending a four-on-three Centennials powerplay.

Regulation and overtime shots were 44-29 in favour of Osoyoos, including a dominant 15-3 second period margin.

However, Merritt held a 9-3 shot advantage in overtime, largely bolstered by their powerplay chance.

Hunter Arntsen earned the win in net, allowing the Coyotes to split the weekend home-and-home against the Centennials.

The now 6-6-0-0 Osoyoos Coyotes will have their work cut out this coming Tuesday night (Oct. 29th) when they face the league-leading Posse in Princeton.  It doesn’t get any easier from there as the Revelstoke Grizzlies visit the Sun Bowl Arena next Saturday night (Nov. 2nd) at 7:00, featuring Game Sponsor Save on Foods.
